THE CIRCUS OF DREAMS
There was a barrage of reaction to the circus called the super league over the weekend. A number of people came out and stated the obvious after their teams were slaughtered by officials. The media mentioned these comments in passing, preferring to focus on the big stories instead, Cisse's inclusion in the French squad, supposed interest from Inter Milan, Juventus and AC Milan for Ninis (please), Torosidis immanent big European transfer (Arsenal amongst others mentioned), Diogo being loaned out to Botafogo,( Complete shock this one, because Chelsea has been chasing his signature for 2 years now, offering 30m Euros, which Olympiakos has continually rejected,of course), Olympiakos officials expressing outrage at the favouritism and the penalty given to Panathinaikos. ( if there is one team that doesn't have a right to even breath about refereeing ,it's them) Panathinaikos officials expressing outrage at the favouritism afforded to Olympiakos and the penalty that was not awarded against them. Panathinaikos supporters accusing Panionios President Konstantinos Tsakiris of being a secret Olympiakos fan for daring to complain about the refereeing and the non-existent penalty awarded against his team, Olympiakos fans accusing him of being a secret Panathinaikos fan, you get the picture. Both sides playing smoke and mirrors by portraying the other as a beneficiary of the referees and them self as victim.

By attacking the victims, (with the media by their side),they think they can make us forget, what we saw three days ago. And what did we see? We saw Panathinaikos awarded a non -existent penalty which was not a human error from the referee, and Atromitos not awarded a clear penalty against Olympiakos which also was not a human error as the referee was five metres from the incident, rather we witnessed deliberate intervention from the referees of both matches to ensure the correct team was victorious.Panathinaikos may well have gone on to win the match without the phantom penalty, but if the pressure was not released so early, they may not have, we will never know. As for Olympiakos, if Atromitos had been awarded and converted the penalty in the 64th minute, there is now way they would have gone on to win, most likely they would have been defeated, as those watching the game know full well. By attacking the victims you don't fool anyone other than your own supporters.

I always gave Panathinaikos supporters far more credit and respect than Olympiakos, I thought they cared about their team winning the championship cleanly ,but it's apparent after the weekend that they have become so anxious and desperate, having let slip an unassailable 8 point lead a few weeks ago, they are now prepared to descend to the level of Olympiakos to win the championship. Anyone claiming the challenge on Ninis was a penalty, does not warrant a response. ( you have just become a gavro) A championship and the way it's administered is a reflection of a country's society at large, compare England, Germany, France, Spain, in no country other than Greece is the title the personal property of two teams.

It's clear that PAOK will not be permitted to win the title or ever be allowed to become a genuine third force in Greek football, quite simply they fear us because they know how much greater we would be, if we had on field success and duration. You don't fool anyone, we know that you prefer each other to win the title rather than PAOK , and the fact you think that we would be playing to help either one of you against the other shows your diseased mentality and how small you think PAOK is.

We have taken one small step forward, and they're already trembling. PAOK keep winning and force them to ridicule themselves even more.

To repeat the chant of the Panionios supporters on the weekend in their match against Olympiakos:

«Αυτό είναι σωστό, πρωτάθλημα στον ΠΑΟΚ να βάλλεται μυαλό»

Below are the comments concerning the weekend's games, this is just the beginning of what we are about to see...

Tsakiris "The POK (Olympiakos, Panthinaikos, AEK) is a disaster. They all have the same stench."

Panionios President Konstantinos Tsakiris was scathing in his criticism of the POK ( Podosferikes Omades Kentrou - Olympiakos, Panathinaikos, AEK), and particularly against Panathinaikos after Sunday's match ,the cause of his outburst was the refereeing, and the penalty decision awarded to Panathinaikos in their first foray in to Panionios penalty box in the 20th minute of the encounter when the scores were locked at 0 - 0 in a drab encounter where neither side had created anything closely resembling a scoring opportunity.

" We will look at our own performance. As for the refereeing, let someone else concern themselves with it, im bored about talking about the same things year after year. In Greece, we kid ourselves. Panathinaikos is a better team and could have won without assistance because we didn't play well. Panathinaikos came here to take the win by force, the same way Olympiakos secured the three points. They all have the same stench, the POK is the destruction of Greek football. They should leave and let us play by ourselves. If this was a clean Championship, PAOK would have almost secured the title by now. The only game we were favoured this year was against PAOK at home, where PAOK was deprived of 2 points, conversely against Panathinaikos this season, we have had 4 points stolen from us, the same applies for Olympiakos and AEK."

Donis " Its impossible to win a penalty in Karaiskaki"

Atromitos manager Giorgos Donis could not contain his anger about the refereeing after his sides clash with Olympiakos in his post match press conference.
"Inferior teams to Atromitos are in higher places on the table. Our results should not be determined by non existent people. Unfortunately, we know that when we play against the big three Athenian teams, we will not receive equal treatment from the referees. It's impossible to win a penalty in Karaiskaki. The state of Greek football is such, that it's totally logical to me that we will never be awarded a penalty against Olympiakos, Panathinaikos and AEK, as the past has proved."

* It should be noted that Donis is a former Panathinaikos player, and AEK manager.

Karageorgiou " The best team does not always win in football"

Ergoteli manager Nikos Karageorgiou described the result of his sides match against AEK as unfair, highlighting the referees performance.
"I don't think it was a good game by any means, however we controlled the match and I believe we should have won. We didn't put our chances away and the team that scores wins. In football the better team doesn't always win."

In regards to the penalty ( replays clearly show an infringement) that was not given to his side, Karageorgiou replied " The same thing occurs every time, and will occur again the next time we travel to Athens to play Olympiakos, Panathinaikos or AEK. When we play against the big three from Athens we also play against the four officials. Because it's not only the three officials on the pitch but also the fourth , who today whenever we stood up from the bench immediately told us to sit down. But there's no point talking about it, it will be swept under the carpet and we have to pretend it never happened, just like the win that was stolen from us against Olympiakos two weeks ago. That's already been forgotten because it suits those in charge. We have to accept our fate and that of Greek football."

Finally the Ergoteli manager who played for both PAOK and Panathinaikos during his career, when asked said" I wish PAOK all the best for the Championship, they would be deserving winners in most people's eyes, they are the most complete team we have played this year, and their supporters deserve it, but I cant see it being allowed to come to pass."

PAOK - WORTHY CHAMPIONS
After watching PAOK destroy Xanthi on Saturday (in their most impressive performance this year, considering the stake's, the anti -PAOK fanaticism of Xanthi's owner, and the ease of the win in a difficult edra) I woke up this morning hoping for a Panathinaikos (the fact they needed assistance to beat a struggling Panionios shows they are not the best team in the league) and Olympiakos ,(having seen Atromitos play against PAOK this year in Toumba, I could not imagine how Olympiakos could get anything more than a draw in this game without "human error") but fully expecting them to win one way or another. Unfortunately for Greek football I was proved correct.
This round of matches confirmed the following; to me and all sane football fans disassociated from team bias:
1. PAOK is the best performed team in the league this season, and deserving champions. Up until now I believed Panathinaikos was a superior team, but after witnessing the performances and method of the two teams victories on the weekend, (one achieved with the assistance of the officials, and the other achieved because the official was taken out of the game by the 12th minute), I am now convinced.
2. If referees were consistent in their decisions to both teams in every super league match, PAOK would be sitting on top of the league with a significant gap from our contenders, the championship would be ours despite our financial disadvantages and lack of "star" players.
3. Panthinaikos and Olympiakos will be carried into their derby in three weeks time without any loss of points, that match will decide the "Champion" for the 2009/2010 season.
The message PAOK fans received on the weekend is loud and clear, you will not win the championship. Fortunately PAOK finished the game off early against Xanthi, denying the referee the opportunity to influence the outcome of the result, despite his valiant efforts.
Let's examine some incidents from each of the matches involving the title contenders.
1. Xanthi v PAOK - Ivic is brought down in front of the referee, a clear penalty (no one disputes this, including the referee), the referee allows play to continue citing an advantage to PAOK, the ball ends up with Sorlen , who under pressure from a defenders challenge shoots the ball on to the bar from 12 yards on an angle. The decision not to award a penalty was an advantage to whom? Two Xanthi players escaped red cards for infringements that were clearly send off's, one of them was for an identical challenge to the one Melberg committed against Ergoteli last week which was also ignored, allowing Olympiakos to salvage a point in a game in which they were destroyed by the opposition in the second half, and should have come away with nothing.
2. Panionios - Panathinaikos - In the 20th minute, Ninis goes down in an innocuous incident in the Panionios penalty box, the referee without hesitation awards a penalty. Replays from every angle show that it was not a penalty (even a viewer from Mars could discern this), a yellow card should have been given to Ninis for diving, instead Panathinaikos, having scored the penalty, relieved of all pressure and anxiety, not needing to force the game, go on to secure three points. The commentators of the game are trying to convince the viewers who saw the incident with their own eyes that it was a penalty.

3. Olympiakos - Atromitos - Melberg brings down Saganovski of Atromitos in the 63rd minute of the encounter, a clear penalty which I don't think 99% of their own supporters can deny, the referee waves play to continue. The score at the time was 1-0 in favour of Olympiakos. The foul committed by Melberg, was the type you expect to view in refereeing training manuals shown to 20 year old prospective referees entering the profession, as to what constitutes a clear penalty. The commentators of this game, label the penalty "claims" of the Atromitos players as doubtful, trying to convince the viewer watching, that Atromitos would have been fortunate to have the penalty penalty. Olympiakos was so lame in this match that they were playing for time (time wasting) from the 50th minute onwards; I will not comment further on the refereeing in this match, it was the same as it has been the last 14 years, disgraceful and shameful.
Let's examine the manner in which the three title contenders won over the weekend, and you will have your answer as to who is the credible champion this year, furthermore you will understand how it's possible for Panathinaikos to be leading with Olympiakos in equal second. Ironically, their two worthy opponents on the weekend were the teams against which, PAOK had two legitimate goals disallowed by officials earlier in the year, depriving the team of an extra four points, what a difference those points would make now. Conversely Panathinaikos and Olympiakos have been awarded extra points than their performances have warranted.
Impartially, based on performance and the "human error" element of referees, PAOK should be 5-6 points ahead of Panathinaikos, as for Olympiakos they should be 10 points behind Panathinaikos, and that's being generous. The fact that Olympiakos is being kept in the title race at least until the upcoming derby is a disgrace to Greek football, the team is finished, it's performances woeful, they are being kept in the hunt because if Panathinaikos self destructs to such an extent that even the referees cant help them in some game, and they somehow manage to beat Panathinaikos when they meet, then Olympiakos will be awarded the title by default. PAOK cannot be allowed to disrupt the status quo under any circumstances, irrespective of the fact that they are the best performed team this year, the stakes are too high. Champions league money on the one hand for Panathinaikos and more so Olympiakos, and the threat of the emergence of PAOK as a genuine rival, competing on an equal footing on the other. (Championship and automatic Champions league qualification)
The rest of the championship, will be extremely difficult for PAOK, the team will need to win 6 out of 6 matches, defeat six teams, 6 referees, and 12 linesmen. Our main title contenders will have 5 referees, and 10 linesman on their side pushing them forward, (I have omitted the officials from the match between themselves) PAOK's sustained performance has made their upcoming derby into a title decider, a situation which neither side would have wished for, for different reasons.
Our objective is to destroy their well laid plans, continue winning despite the obstacles they place before us, and force them to expose themselves and their underhanded tactics ever more, every week until the end of the championship. We owe it to every healthy minded Greek football fan.

PAOK PANO APO OLA

P.S. We have purposefully left out AEK from this discussion as they are not in the title race , suffice to say they were also the beneficiary of a human error on the weekend, when the referee in their match , did not award a training manual penalty to Ergotelis in the 93rd minute of the encounter. I mention it because this team has been pushed into fourth position, when the reality is they should be sitting in 7th or 8th.

PANOPOULOS BLOCKS PAOK SUPPORTERS FROM XANTHI
Xanthi President Christos Panopoulos has announced that no supporters other than Xanthi season ticket holders (2,134) will be permitted entry to Saturday nights match. No tickets will be sold at ticket booths located at the stadium, denying individual PAOK and Xanthi fans the opportunity to attend the game. While organised fans have been banned from travelling to away games following a directive from the government, individual fans have not, this is contrary to the law, this decision was made by Panopoulos, a well known servant of Olympiakos, and the biggest anti-PAOKTSI in Greece.
This decision denies the over 200,000 thousand PAOK supporters in the Xanthi, Komotini and Kavala regions the opportunity to support their team at close quarters in the stadium, as well as non season ticket holding Xanthi supporters. With this unprecedented decision, Panopoulos has again unmasked himself as the servant of his paymaster Olympiakos, leading us to question who will reimburse him for the money in gate receipts he is willingly foregoing. This is an obvious ploy to provoke PAOK supporters, hoping to incite trouble which will have negative repercussions on PAOK for the remainder of the season and advantage his benefactor Olympiakos.
Everyone in Greece knows what the next 7 games mean for PAOK and its fans, Panopoulos is aware as all Greek football fans are (regardless of team), that PAOK fans travel to away games in greater numbers than any other team, Panopoulos has made this decision knowing full well that as private citizens, thousands of PAOK supporters will travel to Xanthi, he is creating tension in the hope of fireworks. PAOK fans have shown that when they are treated correctly (Serres, Kavala) they don't provoke disturbances, they respect their hosts.
Gentlemen of the State,
The question of whether the prohibition of the movement of organised supporters to away games has been enforced to serve hidden agendas is a matter we will leave for another time. However, no one can prevent the free movement of individuals within a democratic country; quite simply it is unconstitutional as the minister of the interior himself has declared.
However, despite these declarations, PAOK supporters travelling as non organised individual citizens have been prevented from entering the towns of Levadia, Gianena and within the city of Thessaloniki in which they live, our supporters did not respond to these anti-democratic provocations.
During the same period, we witnessed Olympiakos fans travel to Kavala, Crete, Nea Smyrni and Xanthi. We witnessed AEK fans travel to Kaftazoglio, Komotini and Kavala. We witnessed Panathinaikos fans travel to Larisa, Xanthi and Kaftazoglio. We witnessed Aris fans travel to Xanthi, Gianena, Athens, and Livadia. (With police protection, no less) We witnessed Gianena fans travel to Kavala, and Komotini, we witnessed Iraklis fans travel to Xanthi and Gianena. We witnessed Panionos fans travel to Gianena and Harilaou, we witnessed Xanthi and Panthrakikos fans travel to Kaftazoglio. All these movements occurred without any blocks or resistance from the authorities.
Gentlemen of the State,
During this same period, the sheriff of Livadia ordered the local police and urged locals to stop any PAOK fans from entering the town, the sheriff of Gianena ordered the local police force to prevent all vehicles with Thessaloniki number plates from entering the city on the day of PAOK's match in Gianena. Battalions of MAT were deployed around the perimeter of Kaftazoglio to prevent any PAOK supporters from approaching the stadium. To reiterate, were talking here about private citizens who happen to support PAOK, not organised groups of supporters, to whom the ban applies. All these events have occurred in the past few months gentlemen. Miraculously, all these coincidences were directed towards individuals who happen to support PAOK. The state through its actions has demonstrated that the laws do not apply to everyone equally.
As we are not second class citizens, we demand the same treatment as other individual citizens who support teams other than PAOK, and are free to travel throughout Greece without restrictions.
P.S. Panopoulous has once again unmasked himself as Olympiakos agent in the north, this is the man who opens the gates of the city to the Olympiakos carnival every year , and guarantees his masters 3 points before they even step on the pitch against his own team. It's no wonder Xanthi fans want him out.
P.S. It's time we sent Olympiakos annexation in the North to the second division, with or without fans. We have nothing against the beautiful city of Xanthi or its inhabitants, 80 percent of whom are PAOK supporters, which Panopoulos knows full well.

SERIOUS MENTALITY BRINGING REWARDS FOR PAOK

On Friday afternoon at a shopping centre in Thessaloniki, PAOK fans were back slapping Fernando Santos and were asking for victory over Panathinaikos. "That's our aim," replied the Portuguese manager dryly without any promises.

That same evening, at an entertainment venue, patrons were asking Theodoros Zagorakis for victory to keep PAOK alive in the title race. Zagorakis answered with a smile, maintaining his low profile, no promises mentality of taking it a step at a time, an attitude complimented by Zisis Bryzas.

This attitude explains how PAOK has managed , with a roster and budget 1/5th of that of Panathinaikos and Olympiakos to find itself , with seven games remaining , equal on points with Olympiakos and with Panathinaikos firmly in their sights after Sunday's game. Theoretically, a team that that beaten both Olympiakos and Panathinaikos in the last month and is now a genuine title contender has every reason to be proud of itself and brag accordingly. However that is the culture that Santos, Zagorakis and Bryzas are battling against.
They are trying to change the modern culture at PAOK, not to be satisfied with one big win, but to keep working hard with their head down until the end of the season. That's why the President and Manager are anxious to keep everyone focused on the job at hand, to prevent the players from relaxing as happened after the game with Olympiakos. It's because of this seriousness that PAOK has the opportunity of making the great leap forward.

If PAOK does not succeed, it will be because of its financial disadvantage as compared to its two rivals, or because it will pay for what in Greek football is called "human error", in other words unjust refereeing decisions. PAOK may not succeed because it will pay for past losses, either due to its own mistakes or referees errors. However it won't be a result of having its head in the clouds. This PAOK team is the most mature and competitive team of the last 25 years.
In a genuine title deciding derby, PAOK did not succeed because it was a superior team, it won because it displayed great passion, concentration and dedication to its aim, and something it did not possess previously: the luxury of having two capable strikers. The luxury of bringing off the bench a striker like Mouslimovic, who finally replicated last year's initial good form by executing clinically to punish Panathinaikos.

What has occurred at PAOK in the last month is a resounding answer to Santos's critics. To those who labelled him a "loser" because he was unable to win derbies, doesn't engage in public relations, celebrate his team's goals the way people want him too, or comment on how great the fans are. Fortunately the level of the Greek football fan (excluding Olympiakos fans) is much higher than the opinion makers of the Greek market think. That's why Santos was declared the top manager of the past 10 years in Greece, from the fans. The Portuguese manager continues to pay for his choice of not having a public relations manager, not dying his hair, not wearing suits, and not drinking coffee at Kolonaki. Fortunately for PAOK, Santos doesn't have time for these pursuits; he is concerned with real, not television football.

PAOK ON THE VERGE
There's no need to wait until the end of the season to evaluate PAOK'S performance this year. Relative to its budget, quality and more importantly quantity of roster, as compared to their rivals, Fernando Santos's team has achieved a small miracle.
The position the team finds itself in, 2 points behind Panathinaikos and equal points with Olympiakos at this stage of the season exceeds expectations. What PAOK has achieved so far is equivalent to the title, because on the pitch PAOK is first when it comes to reliability, organisation, cohesion, seriousness, determination, teamwork, discipline, and defensive set-up. It is a team in every sense of the word with Santo's seal of approval.
PAOK was no better than Panthinaikos in the derby; however the team was more effective and determined. A five minute period of sustained pressure (55 - 60th) was enough to open the score with Pablo Garcia's magic free kick. And as quickly as Panathinaikos reacted with Cisse in the 64th, PAOK responded instantaneously with Mouslimovic's composed finish to Lino's brilliant through pass, killing the game off despite some late defensive nerves.
The fact that PAOK beat Panathinaikos without playing well makes it an even greater success. It shows that the team has overcome the syndrome of the past; the team is now capable of winning the big games without having to play a class above their opponents to do so. Simply by exploiting the opportunities presented, PAOK collected the three points which have put it firmly in the title race, something completely unexpected 2 months ago, when the climb began with the win against Ergoteli at Irakleion.
In the past PAOK has played far better in derbies without managing to win, however after the win away to Olympiakos, this win cements the team's belief in itself. It demonstrates that under equal treatment their two main contenders are not superior teams to PAOK regardless of the final standings at the end of the season. The team had a lot of pressure heading into the game, had PAOK lost to Panathinaikos they would have lost the opportunity to challenge the status quo of Modern Greek football history, however PAOK now has the right to seek a level playing field against the other two contenders without any outside interference from the powers that be.

With this victory, PAOK officially enters the title race ,all we ask of the team is that they continue to give their all in the remaining matches with the same dedication and consistency they have done all season, it's a heavy load because a championship, however unlikely, will permanently change PAOK'S future prospects. We make no demands on the team, we respect every opponent and understand that winning is not a birth right, it's something that is to be won on the pitch, not in the boardrooms. All we ask of our players is that they continue to give everything on the pitch as they have done all season, and regardless of the results our support will be unconditional.
